Аверинское городище, Archaeological settlement in Voronezh Oblast, Russia
Averinskoye is an archaeological settlement built on a promontory overlooking the Potudan River valley. The site spreads across a large earthen rampart with an adjacent moat that once protected the ancient community.
The settlement was inhabited from the 5th to the 2nd century BCE as part of Scythian civilization. Excavations from 1965 to 1995 revealed evidence of sustained occupation and periods of conflict or destruction.
The site contains numerous artifacts including burned clay fragments and charcoal remnants, indicating the presence of ancient wooden structures and settlement patterns.
The site is accessible on foot and the earthen ramparts are visible year-round, though they appear more defined after rain or snow. Wearing sturdy shoes is advisable since the ground is uneven and can become muddy.
The rampart contains large fused clay deposits scattered throughout, likely remnants of major fires that consumed wooden structures. These burnt layers provide direct clues to events that shaped the settlement's history.
