Aurajoki

Aurajoki is a river in southwestern Finland that flows approximately 70 kilometers from Oripää through several municipalities, featuring eleven rapids before reaching the Archipelago Sea near Turku. Multiple settlements line its course, shaping the landscape throughout its passage.

Human settlements along this river date back approximately 6000 years, making it one of the earliest inhabited regions in southwestern Finland. This long history of habitation shaped the cultural and economic development of the surrounding area.

The name Aura carries two meanings: in ancient Swedish it refers to a waterway, while in Finnish it means a plow, reflecting the agricultural roots of the region.

The water often appears brownish due to agricultural runoff, which visitors will notice immediately. Water extraction facilities near the rapids provide insight into how the river serves the wider region's needs.

Salmon populations returned to the river following environmental restoration efforts that began in the 1970s, despite the water remaining colored by sediment. This comeback demonstrates how a stressed waterway can recover with focused improvement.
