Arkazhsky Monastery, Medieval monastery in Veliky Novgorod, Russia
Arkazhsky Monastery is a medieval religious settlement located about 3 kilometers south of Veliky Novgorod with partially preserved stone walls and building foundations. Excavations at the site have uncovered remains of several churches and residential structures that reveal how this complex developed over time.
The site was established in 1153 as a religious community founded by Abbot Arkady, a figure who later rose to become Bishop of Novgorod. This initial wooden chapel marked the beginning of an important local religious center that expanded significantly in the following centuries.
The monastery received patronage from numerous nobles and mayors, leading to the construction of multiple stone churches throughout the medieval period.
The place is now an archaeological site where ongoing research continues. Visitors should expect exposed foundations and excavated terrain, so comfortable footwear is helpful for navigating the uneven ground.
Archaeologists discovered two boat-shaped stone sarcophagi containing burials arranged in a manner contrary to standard Christian practice. These unusual graves suggest local customs that differed from practices in distant religious centers.
