Arkazhsky Monastery, Medieval monastery in Veliky Novgorod, Russia
Located 3 kilometers south of Veliky Novgorod, the monastery complex includes remnants of stone walls and religious structures uncovered during archaeological excavations.
The monastery was established in 1153 by Abbot Arkady, who later became Bishop of Novgorod, with the initial wooden Church of the Assumption.
The monastery received patronage from numerous nobles and mayors, leading to the construction of multiple stone churches throughout the medieval period.
Archaeological investigations continue at the site, providing insights into burial practices and architectural development of religious institutions in medieval Russia.
Researchers discovered two boat-shaped sarcophagi containing bodies positioned contrary to traditional Christian burial customs, indicating distinctive funeral practices.
