Вержавск, Archaeological site and fortified settlement in Demidovsky District, Russia.
The archaeological complex includes a fortified hill area of 100 by 45 meters surrounded by earthen walls reaching 2.2 meters in height.
First mentioned in Prince Rostislav's charter of 1150, Verzhavsk served as a significant trading point on the route from the Varangians to the Greeks.
The settlement contains a cultural layer up to 1 meter thick with materials from the 12th and 13th centuries, including numerous artifacts from pre-Mongol times.
The site lies 600 meters west of the modern village of Gorodishche in the Smolensk region, near Lakes Rzhavets and Poganoye.
The settlement generated 1000 silver grivnas in tax revenue, indicating its substantial economic importance in medieval Smolensk principality.
