Volgograd Bridge, Suspension bridge in Volgograd, Russia
Volgograd Bridge runs for 1212 meters across the Volga River, linking Volgograd to Krasnoslobodsk. The construction combines steel girders and reinforced concrete and includes traffic lanes plus a pedestrian walkway.
Construction started in 1996 and stalled several times because of funding shortages, reaching only 40 percent completion by 2005. The opening finally took place in 2009 after more than a decade of work.
The structure carries the nickname Dancing Bridge after it moved up and down during high winds in May 2010. This name now recalls the early engineering challenges faced by the crossing.
Crossing is possible on foot or by vehicle, with sidewalks running along both directions. Engineers installed damping systems following the 2010 oscillation episode, which now maintain stable driving conditions.
The design separates vertical and horizontal loads in a manner that was uncommon for river crossings at the time. The main metal span measures 155 meters and allows free passage for ships beneath.
