Saint Vladimir Skete

Saint Vladimir Skete is an Orthodox monastery on Valaam Island featuring traditional Russian wooden buildings and religious symbols. The complex consists of several churches, monastic quarters, and service buildings arranged around a central courtyard.

The monastery originated in the 14th century as part of the larger Valaam Monastery complex and survived destruction during the Russian Revolution and World War II. After that period, it was rebuilt and continues to serve as a functioning monastery today.

The monks here follow strict Orthodox practices and create religious artworks by hand. You will notice how monastic life is shaped by prayer and daily handicraft.

The monastery is reachable only by boat since it sits on an island with minimal visitor infrastructure. Remember to respect the rules of the place and dress appropriately if you wish to attend services.

The monks here produce much of their own food through farming and make many daily items themselves. This self-sufficiency is possible because the island, though isolated, provides enough space and resources.
