Resurrection Cathedral, Arzamas, Orthodox cathedral in Arzamas, Russia
Resurrection Cathedral in Arzamas is a large Orthodox church built on a Greek cross layout with five domes rising above the structure. The building stands as one of the city's most visible landmarks, dominating the skyline with its substantial brick and iron construction.
Construction started in 1814 under architect Mikhail Korinfsky to commemorate Russia's victory over Napoleon's 1812 invasion. The exterior took 28 years to complete, with interior decoration work extending well beyond, reflecting the building's significance as a national monument.
The cathedral's interior paintings and decorations were created by students of the Arzamas School of Art, including Osip Serebryakov and his son Alexander.
The cathedral is open for worship and visits, having reopened after major restoration in 2023. Plan to spend time exploring the interior space, and dress respectfully if visiting during religious services.
The building was founded on roughly 1000 cubic meters of rubble stone to create a stable base beneath the wet ground. This hidden engineering effort shows how much work went into establishing such a massive structure on difficult terrain.
