Kaluga International Airport, International airport "Kaluga"
Kaluga International Airport is a regional aerodrome located a short distance west of Kaluga, in the rural settlement of Grabtsevo, serving domestic and some international routes. The terminal is a single, compact building with check-in desks, a waiting area, a cafe, and a small number of shops all within easy walking distance of one another.
The airport opened in the early 1970s to handle domestic traffic and remained in regional use for several decades before activity slowed considerably. Starting around 2013, the runway and ground infrastructure were upgraded to allow the facility to operate international routes.
Kaluga is closely associated with the early history of space exploration in Russia, and this connection is part of the local identity that travelers passing through the region may notice. The airport itself feels like a gateway to a city with a strong sense of local pride rather than a generic transit hub.
The airport is west of Kaluga city center and can be reached by bus or taxi in a short ride from the main streets. Because the terminal is small, moving through it is straightforward, but arriving a little early is a good idea as international departures may involve more thorough checks.
Despite carrying the name international, this airport is one of the smallest in the region and on quiet days can feel almost like a private airfield. That low volume of traffic makes departures and arrivals here noticeably calmer than at most other airports serving cities of similar size.
