Memorial complex «Doblestnym synam Otechestva», Military memorial at Boulevard of Glory, Chelyabinsk, Russia
This memorial is formed by two massive granite blocks that resemble a mountain gorge, topped by a bronze eagle with a wingspan of about 16 feet (5 meters). The structure reaches 14 meters in height and is accompanied by black granite steles bearing names of the fallen, with an Eternal Flame completing the composition.
The memorial was completed in 2004 to honor soldiers from Chelyabinsk who died in conflicts in Afghanistan and Chechnya from 1971 to 2012. It was built to ensure this sacrifice and loss would not be forgotten by future generations.
The complex is named "To the Valiant Sons of the Motherland" and has become the city's main place for remembering those lost in conflict. Visitors can walk past the black granite steles bearing soldiers' names and spend time in quiet reflection.
The memorial is located on Boulevard of Glory between Pushkin and Svobody Streets, making it easy to find and reach. The surrounding gardens planted with blue spruces and birch trees provide a calm setting for a visit.
The two granite blocks each weigh 180 tons and stay in place without cement, using the same construction method as Saint Petersburg's Alexander Column. This traditional technique shows how ancient building methods continue to be applied for important monuments today.
