Museum of Sverdlovsk Railway, Railway museum in Yekaterinburg, Russia.
The Museum of Sverdlovsk Railway occupies a restored 1878 station building on Vokzalnaya Street, housing extensive collections of locomotives and railway equipment across two sections. One section is the central historic building, while the other is a large open display area at Yekaterinburg-Sortirovochny station featuring preserved locomotives.
The building served as Yekaterinburg's main railway station from 1878 to 1914, designed by architect Pyotr Shreyber during the construction of the Ural mining railway. It was built when the railway was driving industrial expansion across the region and transforming the local economy.
Bronze sculptures of travelers and railway workers at the entrance show how the railway shaped the city and its people. They tell the story of daily life around the trains that connected this region to the rest of the country.
The museum has two separate sections, so visitors should plan time to see both and arrange transportation between them. The outdoor locomotive display area is open to the weather, so it helps to visit on a clear day and wear appropriate clothing.
Visitors can explore a recreated 1950s station attendant workplace with original equipment and historical ticketing systems on display. This reconstruction offers a glimpse into the daily work and routine of railway staff from that era.
