Замок Алленбург, Medieval castle ruins in Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia
Allenburg Castle was a Teutonic fortification built between a stream and river in what is now Kaliningrad Oblast. The stronghold featured defensive walls protecting the enclosed settlement and surrounding territory.
The castle was founded in 1257 after the Teutonic Order destroyed an earlier wooden Prussian stronghold on the same site. It underwent several reconstructions over the centuries before its eventual destruction.
The castle served as a focal point for German settlers establishing themselves in the region. Its role as an administrative center connected the local population to the broader structures of the Teutonic Order.
The former castle site is now occupied by private residential buildings and can be located on modern maps near the Alle River. The area is accessible on foot, but visitors should know that the ground has been built over and only limited remains are visible.
The hill where this fortress stood was called Zickelberg, a name that translates from Prussian origins into German as Goat Mountain. This local name reflects how geography and language blended in the region's history.
