Monastery of the Theotokos of the Sign

The Monastery of the Theotokos of the Sign stands on the left bank of the Klyazma River and features a cubic stone church with three apses and decorative kokoshniks beneath the cornice. The complex comprises several buildings arranged around a central courtyard, with the entire ensemble visible from the river.

The monastery was founded in 1598 as a male community with wooden structures and received its first stone buildings from 1679 onwards through merchant Semyon Ershov's funding. The transition from wood to stone marked a turning point in regional construction methods.

The complex displays architectural elements that spread throughout the region, such as decorative platbands and triangular window decorations that appear in other local buildings.

The monastery is reached via a pontoon bridge across the Klyazma River, with conditions varying by season. The complex now operates as a female monastic community and welcomes visitors, though modest dress is expected.

The bell tower from 1753 is octagonal and rises from a square base with a tented roof style, which was uncommon at that time. This form shows how the monastery's architecture anticipated regional building styles and influenced them.
