Monastery of the Theotokos of the Sign

Founded in 1598 as a male abode with wooden structures, the monastery received its first stone buildings in 1679 through funding from merchant Semyon Ershov.

The architectural design established standards for regional construction, incorporating elements such as figured platbands and triangular window decorations that influenced local buildings.

Visitors reach the monastery via a pontoon bridge across the Klyazma River, with the complex now operating as a female diocesan institution open to tourists.

The monastery's octagonal bell tower, constructed in 1753, rises from a square base and stands as an early example of tented roof architecture in Gorokhovets.
