Ilyinsky sobor, Tempel in Russland
The Ilyinski Sobor is a brick building from the 19th century standing on the bank of the Krutets stream in Soltsy, built in the style of Russian high classicism. The structure includes a main church topped with five domes, a dining hall, and a bell tower approximately 38 meters tall with three interior altars dedicated to the prophet Elijah, Saint Nicholas, and the Virgin of Kazan.
A wooden church originally stood on this site, first mentioned around 1516, serving the local faithful for centuries. Between 1824 and 1825, the stone building was constructed to replace it, becoming a lasting landmark in Soltsy and reflecting the town's growth and prosperity.
The cathedral bears the name of the prophet Elijah, reflecting its central role in the town's spiritual life. The community continues to gather here for worship and maintains traditions such as the annual celebration on August 2, when pilgrims visit from surrounding areas.
The cathedral stands on the bank of the Krutets stream and is easily accessible from the town center. It is best visited on days when services are held or during cultural events, when the building is open and you can explore its interiors.
Inside are wall paintings from the late 19th century inspired by works in the Cathedral of Saint Vladimir in Kyiv. These murals depict biblical scenes in bright colors and old Russian motifs, with some panels remaining in good condition despite decades of hardship.
