Кривоезерский монастырь

The Krivoezersky Monastery stands on the Volga River banks, featuring classical Russian architectural elements with multiple religious buildings. The complex now lies submerged beneath the Gorky Reservoir and can only be reached by boat from the nearby town of Yuryevets.

Founded in 1643, this monastery became a major religious center of the region. Its original buildings disappeared beneath the waters when the Gorky Reservoir was constructed in the 1950s.

The monastery gained recognition when monk Cornelius created the Jerusalem Icon of the Mother of God, which became central to local worship. This religious artwork drew pilgrims and shaped the spiritual life of the region for many generations.

The site now lies in the Gorky Reservoir and requires a boat trip from nearby Yuryevets. Good weather conditions are important for visiting, so plan your trip accordingly and check local conditions beforehand.

Artist Isaac Levitan captured the monastery in his 1892 painting 'Evening Bells,' preserving its image before the later flooding. This artwork remains one of the few visual records of the original complex.
