Lokomotiv Stadium, Football stadium in Saratov, Russia
Lokomotiv Stadium is a sports facility in Saratov, Russia, with an artificial turf field and an undersoil heating system. The main grandstand has individual plastic seats, and the grounds also include running tracks and tennis courts.
The site started as a horse racing track in 1889 and was turned into a football stadium in 1962 after a local railway sports club moved there. That change marked the beginning of a new phase for the grounds.
The name Lokomotiv refers directly to the railway workers' sports clubs that were common across Soviet cities. This connection to working-class life is still part of how locals relate to the venue today.
The stadium is within walking distance of central Saratov and is easy to find on foot. It is best to visit during dry weather, when the outdoor areas around the grounds are fully open.
In the late 1970s, the stadium's ground had to be largely rebuilt because the soil beneath it had shifted and settled unevenly. The repair work required was far more involved than a standard renovation.
