Maliy Moskvoretsky Bridge, Reinforced concrete arch bridge in central Moscow, Russia.
The Maliy Moskvoretsky Bridge is a reinforced concrete arch bridge in central Moscow that spans the Moskva River. It features one large central arch supported by two smaller side arches that together carry a roadway approximately 40 meters wide.
The bridge was constructed between 1936 and 1937 as a major infrastructure project in central Moscow. It became the first high-capacity crossing at this location and connected Red Square with the southern part of the city.
The pink granite exterior of the bridge reflects Soviet architectural taste from the 1930s and remains a distinctive visual element along the riverbank. This design choice shows how engineers and architects of that era balanced practical needs with aesthetic considerations.
Cross early in the morning or late evening when traffic is lighter for a better walking experience. From the middle of the bridge you get clear views down the river and toward the surrounding buildings.
In 1987 a German pilot landed a small aircraft directly on this bridge in an unexpected act that drew worldwide attention. The incident remains a memorable chapter in Moscow's history and is still discussed and recalled today.
