Нижегородский понтонный мост, Pontoon bridge in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.
The Nizhny Novgorod Pontoon Bridge crosses the Oka River and links the Nagorny and Sormovsky districts over a distance of approximately 370 meters. The structure rests on seven floating barges that adjust to water level changes.
The bridge opened in 1993 as a temporary solution that operated during warmer months. It remained in service until 2016, when construction of new bridge approaches led to its closure.
The structure allowed residents from different neighborhoods to meet and travel more easily across the river. It became an everyday crossing point where local life connected the two sides of the city.
The bridge operated seasonally, opening and closing depending on water levels and ice conditions during spring thaw. Visitors needed to time their crossing with warmer months when the structure was passable.
During the 2010 forest fires, the right-bank fixed section sustained damage and required approximately one month of repairs. This incident revealed how vulnerable the temporary structure was to natural disasters.
