Novaya Dvina Fortress

Novaya Dvina Fortress is a brick and stone fortification located on Linskiy Priluk Island in the Northern Dvina River delta, about 19 kilometers from central Arkhangelsk. The complex includes preserved defensive walls, several bastions, and the Commandant's House with various interior spaces.

Peter the Great commissioned this military stronghold in 1701 to defend Russia's northern maritime routes and the Arkhangelsk port from Swedish forces. The fortress soon became a key position in Russia's struggle for control of the Baltic region.

The fortress represents early 18th-century Russian military design and stands as a symbol of the nation's control over northern maritime trade. Walking through the site, you can observe how the defensive structures shaped daily life for soldiers stationed here.

The site is best accessed through a guided tour departing from Arkhangelsk, which covers the main areas of the complex. Visitors should prepare for damp weather and uneven ground throughout the visit.
