Nikolsky Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Gorokhovets, Russia
Nikolsky Monastery is a monastery on a hill in Gorokhovets, Russia, enclosed by stone walls and containing the Trinity Cathedral and the Church of St John Climacus. Two wooden chapels stand within the grounds, one of which shelters a holy spring.
The site started as a wooden fortress in the early 17th century, and the stone Trinity Cathedral was built later in the same century. The complex survived the demolition campaigns of the 1920s and was eventually returned to the Church.
The monastery is a working religious center where Orthodox services are held throughout the year, drawing both local worshippers and pilgrims from farther away. The holy spring chapel with its separate bathing sections for men and women remains a point of active devotion for visitors today.
The monastery welcomes visitors who wish to attend Orthodox services or walk the grounds. The terrain is hilly and paths can be uneven, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.
The monastery stands on the same hill where a medieval town fortress once stood, giving it a position that overlooks the whole of Gorokhovets. This earlier military role of the hill is still readable in how the complex sits above the town today.
