Teriberka, Coastal village near Murmansk, Russia.
Teriberka is a coastal village on the Barents Sea in the northern part of the Kola Peninsula, roughly 130 kilometers northeast of Murmansk. The settlement runs along a rocky bay with older wooden houses on one side and newer buildings closer to the river mouth.
The village appeared in Russian records in 1523 and expanded into a larger settlement during the 1900s. Norwegian fishing companies established operations then, and the community gained a lighthouse and a weather station.
The village takes its name from the Teriberka River that flows into the bay. Local fishers still bring their boats to the small harbor while visitors walk along the pebble shore looking for driftwood and shells.
The drive from Murmansk takes about two hours through tundra landscape, and the road can be rough in places. Accommodations such as Hotel Ter and the Kovcheg-51 eco-hostel offer simple rooms for visitors.
Several abandoned ship wrecks rest along the shore, rusting in the ice and among the rocks. Frozen waterfalls form in winter where the river meets the sea, and the northern lights appear regularly over the bay.
