Pastorskoe, Lake system in Yukkovsky rural settlement, Russia
Pastorskoe, also known as Beloostrovskoe, is a lake system located north of Saint Petersburg and surrounded by dense forests on all sides. The water connects to neighboring lakes through a natural stream, forming an interconnected water landscape.
The lake area gained importance in the late 1800s when a Finnish railway line was built to connect Saint Petersburg with northern territories. This railway opened the region to greater development and made the area more accessible to residents from the city.
The lake serves as a local gathering spot for fishing and swimming, where nearby residents spend their weekends and free time outdoors. People have developed informal traditions around these water-based activities that connect them to the surrounding forests.
The lake can be reached via the Old Beloostrov route, which passes by garden communities and lies about 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) from the main highway. The route is straightforward and makes for a practical day trip from Saint Petersburg.
A constructed dam at the stream outflow regulates the lake's water level and creates a hydraulic connection with neighboring water bodies. This engineered system allows water levels to be managed across the entire interconnected lake network.
