Petrozavodsk State University, Public university in Petrozavodsk, Russia
Petrozavodsk State University is a higher education institution in the city of the same name in the Republic of Karelia, bringing together multiple faculties and research facilities under one roof. The complex consists of numerous buildings spread across a larger site, connected by pathways and green spaces.
The institution was founded in 1940 as the Karelian-Finnish University, shortly before World War II fundamentally changed life on campus. During the war, many students entered military service, and parts of the institution were temporarily relocated to Syktyvkar.
The institution takes its name from the city where it stands, and its location near Lake Onega reflects a blend of Russian and northern European educational traditions. Visitors can see students from abroad in the corridors and lecture halls, adding an international character to the campus.
Visitors should note that the campus comprises multiple sites that may be some distance apart. A visit is best planned on weekdays when facilities are open and academic life is in full swing.
The grounds hold a botanical garden displaying rare plant species from the region, used for research and teaching purposes. The attached innovation center has completed numerous projects for domestic and international companies in recent years.
