Samara zoo, Municipal zoo in Samara, Russia
Samara Zoo is a zoological garden in the city of Samara, home to animals from Russia and other parts of the world. The grounds are divided into enclosures that house species ranging from local wolves and brown bears to pumas.
The zoo opened in January 1992, shortly after the end of the Soviet Union. Some of its buildings and enclosures date from that era and still shape the look of the grounds today.
The zoo holds regular feeding sessions where keepers talk about animal behavior in front of visitors. Children can watch from close range and ask questions directly to the staff.
Opening hours change with the seasons, with longer days in summer and shorter ones in winter. Visiting on a weekday tends to be quieter than on weekends, especially in warmer months.
The zoo places a particular focus on native Russian species, including animals that naturally live in the Samara region. This means visitors can see species that rarely appear in zoos outside Russia.
