Old Katholikon of the Trinity Lavra, Cathedral in Sergiyev Posad, Russia
The Old Katholikon of the Trinity Lavra is a white stone cathedral located within the Trinity Sergius Lavra monastery complex in Sergiyev Posad, Russia. It has three apses, a single tall dome, and narrow windows that follow the outline of its compact, slightly tapering walls.
Construction took place between 1422 and 1423 under Nikon of Radonezh, and the building was the first stone structure at the Trinity Lavra monastery. It was raised to honor the monastery's founder, Sergius of Radonezh, shortly after his canonization.
The name of the building refers to the Holy Trinity, a central subject in Russian Orthodox faith. Inside, dark wooden icons and candlelight give the space a tone of deep devotion that visitors immediately notice.
The interior is open during services, which take place in the early morning hours. Visitors should dress modestly and be prepared for a working place of worship where silence is expected.
The walls of the cathedral lean slightly inward, giving the whole structure a subtle pyramidal shape that is visible from outside. This feature was unusual among buildings from the early Moscow architectural tradition and sets this cathedral apart from its contemporaries.
