Church of the Deposition from the Borodava, Russian wooden church in Kirillov, Russia.
The Church of the Deposition from the Borodava is a log church from the 15th century, now standing within the grounds of the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery in Kirillov. The building has a simple rectangular shape with a small bell tower and a single onion dome covered with wooden shingles.
The church was built in 1485 on the banks of the Borodava River, making it one of the oldest surviving log structures in Russia. In the 20th century it was dismantled and moved to its current location inside the monastery complex.
The church takes its name from a biblical scene central to Orthodox faith, the laying of Christ in the tomb. Inside, visitors can see icons from the 15th and 16th centuries painted in the style of the old Russian Orthodox tradition.
The church is accessed through the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery grounds, which charge an entry fee. A visit in warmer months is generally easier, as the paths through the grounds can be muddy or slippery in wet weather.
The church was not originally built for a monastery but served as a parish church for villagers living near the Borodava River. This means its plain design reflects everyday rural worship rather than the resources of a monastic institution.
