Saint Catherine of Alexandria orthodox church, Orthodox church in Vasileostrovsky District, Saint Petersburg, Russia
Saint Catherine of Alexandria Orthodox Church is an Orthodox church in Vasileostrovsky District built from white stone with classical design. It features eight Corinthian columns at the front, a central dome with a Greek cross floor plan, and a bell tower added later to the original structure.
Construction began in 1811 following architect Andrey Mikhailov's design and replaced a wooden building destroyed by fire on Christmas Day 1809. The main structure was completed in 1823, with the bell tower added between 1861 and 1863.
The church preserves religious objects that connect to its patron saint and earlier worship on this ground. It continues to function as a place where people gather to pray and practice their faith.
The church stands near Tuchkov Bridge and is easily accessible on foot from the surrounding neighborhood. Religious services happen regularly inside, so visitors should plan visits around active worship times if they wish to enter.
Two prominent Russian poets, Anna Akhmatova and Nikolai Gumilev, lived near the church between 1912 and 1914. Akhmatova referenced the building in her literary work, connecting it to the cultural memory of the city.
