Church of Saint Theodore Stratelates on the Brook, Veliky Novgorod, Medieval Orthodox church in Veliky Novgorod, Russia
The Church of Saint Theodore Stratelates on the Brook is a medieval stone church in Veliky Novgorod featuring a single dome and a three-lobed facade. The exterior walls are decorated with brick and ornamental stone crosses.
The building was constructed between 1360 and 1361 by Semyon Andreyevich, a leader of Novgorod, and his mother Natalia. It stands on the bank of the Fedorovsky Stream and represents an important phase in late medieval building practices.
The interior holds red-brown frescoes from the late 14th century, created by artists working alongside the Byzantine painter Theophanes the Greek. These wall paintings show the distinctive style of the Novgorod school of religious art.
When planning a visit, check the opening schedule in advance since the museum closes on certain days. Audio guides in different languages help you better understand the site's historical details.
Medieval visitors carved many messages into the church walls during the 14th and 15th centuries. These scratched writings offer a direct window into the thoughts and lives of ordinary people from that era.
