Церковь иконы Божией Матери «Взыскание погибших», Russian Revival church in Dubrovka, Leningrad Oblast, Russia
The Church of the Icon of the Mother of God 'Search of the Lost' features white walls and distinctive Orthodox cupolas characteristic of the Leningrad Oblast landscape. The building displays Russian Revival architectural style with elements drawn from medieval Orthodox church design.
The parish community was registered in 1994 and dedicated to the 'Search of the Lost' icon because of the nearby battlefields of the Nevsky Pyatachok. In 1999 it received a former bookshop as a temporary church. The foundation of the new stone church was laid in autumn 2007, the domes were raised on 12 December 2008, and the first service was held on 8 May 2010; the great consecration followed on 24 July 2010.
The dedication to the 'Search of the Lost' icon reflects the fierce battles at the nearby Nevsky Pyatachok. Every year on 27 January, 9 May and 19 September, lists of soldiers who died on the Nevsky bridgehead are read aloud, and those who perished from hunger or cold during the siege are commemorated.
The stone church stands at the end of Leningradskaya Street on the bank of the Neva, facing the Nevsky Pyatachok across the river. It holds 225 people. Memorial lists of those killed on the Nevsky bridgehead are read here every 27 January, 9 May and 19 September.
The church stands on the site of a former House of Culture built in the 1960s, which burned down in 1991 and was dismantled in 2005. The new church, designed by architect Vladislav Mikhailin, was consecrated in 2010. On 29 May 2010, Vladimir Putin visited and donated old icons.
