Chertovo Gorodishche natural boundary

Chertovo Gorodishche is a protected archaeological site in Sosensky with natural sandstone formations that rise above the landscape along the riverbanks. These stone outcrops display various indentations and shapes reflecting long periods of human use and activity.

Hunter-gatherer communities established settlements here during the Stone Age, leaving behind physical evidence of their occupation. Later groups valued the stone formations as sacred spaces and used them for ceremonial purposes across many generations.

The site's name reflects ancient local legends about supernatural beings and held spiritual significance for indigenous peoples. Stone formations served as ritual spaces where communities left marks of their reverence through deliberate indentations carved into the rock.

The site is accessible via established walking paths maintained by National Park Ugra, making exploration straightforward and safe. Wearing sturdy footwear is advisable since the ground around the stone formations is uneven and can be slippery.

The stone outcrops support an unusually diverse plant life with over 200 vascular species, including several varieties found nowhere else in the region. This botanical richness makes the site equally important as a nature reserve alongside its archaeological significance.
