Cemetery in Donskoy Monastery, Necropolis near Donskoy Monastery, Moscow, Russia
The Cemetery in Donskoy Monastery is a burial ground in the Donskoi District of southern Moscow, Russia. The site consists of multiple sections with marble tombstones, crosses, and decorated memorials set among mature trees.
The burial site was established in 1591 when the monastery was founded, initially serving as a resting place for members of the monastic community. Over the centuries it developed into a preferred burial location for nobles and respected members of Russian society.
The name refers to an icon of the Mother of God of the Don that was once kept at the monastery. Today visitors come here to view the elaborate grave monuments and pay respects at the tombs of notable Russian figures.
The grounds can be reached through the main entrance of the monastery on Donskaya Square. The best time to visit is during warmer months when the pathways are dry and easy to walk.
A special section commemorates victims of political persecution and holds remains recovered from mass graves found in different parts of Moscow. This memorial area was created in the 1990s when many of these discoveries were documented and reburied.
