The obelisk was built in 1915 by sculptor Boris Mikeshin to commemorate the fatal duel between poet Mikhail Lermontov and Major Nikolai Martynov on July 15, 1841. The memorial marks a pivotal moment in Russian literary history.

The monument bears Lermontov's name and features classical design elements including griffins at its corners. These decorative details reflect the Russian tradition of honoring notable figures through crafted embellishments.

Visitors can reach the memorial by taking marked pathways through Mount Mashuk, starting from Tsvetnik Park in central Pyatigorsk. The ascent follows a mountain trail with varying grades throughout.

The site holds the status of federal cultural heritage protection in Russia, reflecting its national importance. Each July 15th, writers and literature enthusiasts gather to read the poet's verses aloud at this location.
