Al-Baha Province, Mountain province in southwestern Saudi Arabia
The province sits in southwestern Saudi Arabia and covers mountain ranges, valleys, and forested slopes between the Red Sea coast and the inland plateau. The landscape shifts from rocky peaks to green hillsides that catch mist and cooler air during the rainy season.
Settlements grew here along old trade routes that caravans used between the Red Sea and the interior of the Arabian Peninsula. Tribes adapted to the mountains and built villages on terraces to make use of water and fertile soil.
The Sūq as-Sabt market in Baljorashi continues the commercial traditions of the region through regular gatherings of local merchants and craftspeople.
Access is through highways from larger cities or by regional airport, with winding mountain roads requiring patience. Temperatures are cooler than in most parts of the country, especially at higher elevations during winter months.
More than fifty forest areas cover parts of the region, which is rare in a country with mostly dry plains. Visitors see juniper trees and wild olive groves growing at higher elevations between the rocks.
