Saudi–Egypt Causeway, Transportation project in Strait of Tiran, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
The Saudi–Egypt Causeway is a planned bridge crossing through the Strait of Tiran that will link the coastlines of Saudi Arabia at Ras Humaid and Egypt near Sharm el-Sheikh over a distance of roughly 32 kilometers. The project is designed as a four-lane roadway combined with sections for rail transport and will include several artificial islands along its route.
The idea of a fixed link between the two countries first appeared in the late 1980s and was revisited in 2016 during King Salman's state visit to Cairo. Since then, multiple agreements have been signed and both governments have been working on technical studies for its realization.
The infrastructure project includes arrangements to relocate the Multinational Force and Observers from Tiran Island to develop the area for tourism purposes.
The construction project is currently in planning stages and the start date has been postponed several times. Travelers moving between the two countries will need to continue using ferry or air connections for the time being.
The crossing will include elevated bridge sections to allow ship traffic through the Red Sea to pass underneath. Planning also accounts for the relocation of international observer forces stationed on Tiran Island.
