Tarout Island

Tarout Island, Archaeological island in Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia

Tarout Island is an island in the Eastern Province with archaeological sites and multiple ancient settlements. It connects to mainland Qatif through three causeways, allowing access to various excavation sites and villages spread across the territory.

The island has ancient origins and served as an important trade hub during the Dilmun civilization between Mesopotamia and coastal regions. A fortress was constructed between 1515 and 1521, reflecting its strategic importance across different periods.

The excavations revealed numerous artifacts, including statues from 2500 BC and pottery fragments that demonstrate the continuous human presence through different civilizations.

Visitors can reach the island via causeways from Qatif, with local transportation services available between villages and archaeological sites. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water, as the sites are spread across a large area.

The fortress contains a deep well in its central courtyard that provided water year-round, a rare feature in this desert region. This well was crucial for sustaining settlements and supporting trade activities on the island.
