Tarout Island, Archaeological island in Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia
This 70-square-kilometer island contains multiple ancient settlements, connected to mainland Qatif through three distinct causeways across the Persian Gulf waters.
The island traces its origins to 5000 BC, serving as a central trading point between Mesopotamia and coastal regions during the Dilmun civilization around 3000 BC.
The excavations revealed numerous artifacts, including statues from 2500 BC and pottery fragments that demonstrate the continuous human presence through different civilizations.
Visitors reach the island through causeways from Qatif, with local transportation services operating between villages and archaeological locations across the territory.
The Tarout Castle, constructed between 1515 and 1521, features four defensive towers and contains a central deep water well within its fortified walls.
