Torpa stenhus, Medieval castle in Tranemo Municipality, Sweden

Torpa stenhus is a medieval stone fortress located near Lake Åsunden that served as a residence for the Stenbock family. Its interior features Renaissance rooms with grisaille wall paintings and a baroque chapel on the ground floor that define the building's character.

The castle was built in 1470 by Arvid Knutsson as a defensive stronghold against Danish threats. Major renovations during the 16th and 17th centuries transformed its appearance and function over time.

The Stenbock family, influential Swedish nobility, shaped this place over generations and left their mark on every room. The castle reflects how they lived, through its layout, furnishings, and the stories embedded in its walls.

Visitors can join guided tours to explore the various rooms and watch craft demonstrations showing traditional skills. A restaurant on the grounds serves local food, allowing you to take your time experiencing everything at a comfortable pace.

The castle kept its original wooden walls for centuries, though they were temporarily removed in the 19th century when the building served as a grain storage. This practical conversion left marks on the structure that visitors can still observe today.
