Eskilstunaån

The Eskilstunaån is a small river flowing through Södermanland that links two major lakes through the towns of Eskilstuna and Torshälla. The waterway remains an important geographical feature of the region, supporting both the landscape and the settlements along its course.

A canal system with locks was constructed in the 1860s to improve navigation and support industrial growth along the river. These engineering works transformed how the waterway served the surrounding communities and their economic development.

The river powered the factories and mills that built Eskilstuna as a manufacturing town, and you can still see old industrial buildings along its banks today. These structures show how water was the lifeline of the community for generations.

The riverbanks are accessible at many points with paths suitable for walking or biking along the water. Several public spaces and parks line the river, offering comfortable spots to stop and take in the surroundings.

In its lower section, the river changes its name to Torshällaån, taking the name of the town it flows through before reaching the final lake. This name change reflects how deeply the water is tied to the places it passes through.
