Stjernsund Castle, Manor house in Askersund Municipality, Sweden
Stjernsund Castle is a manor house with neoclassical architecture located on a headland at the north end of Lake Vättern in central Sweden. The main building features a distinctive four-columned portico and sits overlooking the water in a scenic setting.
The castle in its current form was built in 1808 by mill owner Olof Burenstam, who replaced an earlier country house from 1664. The original structure had been constructed by Johan Oxenstierna, a member of Sweden's influential noble family.
Prince Gustaf, known as a talented singer, lived here in the 1850s and filled the rooms with fine furnishings and artworks that reflected royal taste. These decorated interiors remain on display today and give visitors a sense of how the nobility lived during that era.
Visitors can take guided tours from May to September to explore the interior, and there is a lakeside cafe for refreshment and a gift shop for souvenirs. The waterfront location makes it pleasant to walk around the grounds when the weather is favorable.
The estate served as a model farm and played an important role in developing the Swedish Red-and-White cattle breed. This specialized breeding effort was a significant contribution to Swedish agricultural history.
