Stockholm Arlanda Airport, International airport in Sigtuna Municipality, Sweden
Stockholm Arlanda Airport is an international gateway in Sigtuna Municipality, about 37 kilometers (23 miles) north of the capital. The complex consists of four terminals connected by covered walkways and passenger bridges.
The airport opened in December 1959, replacing the earlier Bromma as Sweden's main aviation center. Since then, the facility has undergone several expansions to accommodate growing passenger numbers.
The terminal buildings contain permanent exhibitions of Swedish art, featuring paintings and sculptures that represent different regions of the country.
The Arlanda Express offers a direct train connection to central Stockholm with a journey time of around 20 minutes. Alternatively, buses and taxis depart from the terminal, and car rental desks are located in the arrival halls.
The runways sit about 42 meters (138 feet) above sea level, which is relatively low for Scandinavian airports. During winter months, special attention is given to snow clearance and de-icing operations to keep air traffic moving smoothly.
