Åmål Municipality

Åmål Municipality extends across the western shore of Lake Vänern and includes an archipelago containing 30 islands known as Tösse skärgård.

The current municipality structure emerged in 1971 through the combination of Åmål City and Tössbo rural municipality following Swedish administrative reforms.

The municipal assembly, consisting of elected representatives, manages local services including education, social care, and urban development according to Swedish governance standards.

The municipality maintains a population density of 13 people per square kilometer, with 12,006 residents recorded at the end of 2023.

The municipal territory encompasses protected natural areas where grey herons, ospreys, and capercaillies nest among the forested islands.
