Åmål Municipality

Åmål Municipality stretches along the western shore of Lake Vänern and includes an archipelago with around 30 islands. The area blends urban structures with extensive forest and lake landscapes.

The current municipality formed in 1971 when the city of Åmål merged with the rural municipality of Tössbo. This administrative change was part of a broader restructuring of Sweden's local governance system.

The municipal assembly, consisting of elected representatives, manages local services including education, social care, and urban development according to Swedish governance standards.

The municipality has low population density with plenty of natural space to explore. Visitors can find a mix of lake access, forest trails, and smaller settlements to discover.

The protected natural areas of the island group contain nesting sites for ospreys, grey herons, and capercaillies. These rare bird species count among the most valuable inhabitants of the archipelago.
