Kosterhavet National Park

Kosterhavet is a marine park along Sweden's west coast featuring deep fjords, rocky shores, and underwater meadows around the Koster Islands. The area shows diverse landscapes both below and above the waterline, with large boulders and rock formations defining the coastline.

This area became Sweden's first marine protected zone in 2009, marking an important step in the country's marine conservation policy. The creation showed Sweden's commitment to officially protecting marine ecosystems.

Local fishing communities shape daily life here, working according to specific rules for certain fish species. Their boats and practices remain visible throughout the area and show how people have lived with the sea for generations.

The park is reachable from Strömstad and offers activities such as hiking, paddling, diving, and swimming in designated areas. Weather conditions along the coast can change quickly, so visitors should prepare with appropriate equipment.

The area is home to an unusual variety of marine species, including many found nowhere else in Sweden. This diversity results from the cold, salty conditions in the deep fjords that attract specialized sea creatures.
