Ale's Stones, Stone ship monument in Valleberga, Sweden.
Ale's Stones is a stone ship in Ystad Municipality, Sweden, made up of 59 large boulders arranged in an oval formation. The formation extends 67 meters in length and 19 meters in width on a rise overlooking the coast.
Archaeological excavations in 1989 uncovered a clay pot containing burned human bones, with materials dated between 330 and 650 CE. These finds suggest the monument was built during the Migration Period or Vendel Period.
The name refers to Ale, a figure from Norse legend, though this connection emerged in later centuries. Visitors today can follow the alignment of the stones, which cast particular shadow patterns on the ground during the solstices.
The monument sits roughly 32 meters above sea level and is accessible via paths suitable for wheelchairs. Open access to the grounds allows visitors to walk between the stones and view the oval arrangement from different angles.
Each of the 59 stones weighs roughly 5 tonnes and had to be transported from the surrounding landscape to the coastal rise. The stones now form a striking silhouette visible from the sea, serving as a landmark for sailors.

This collection encompasses ancient stone monuments and sacred sites from across the globe, ranging from the Easter Island Moai to the Great Wall of China. The structures represent millennia of human engineering and include religious temples, fortifications, burial sites, and astronomical installations. Many of these locations retain cultural significance for local communities today. Examples include prehistoric sites such as Göbekli Tepe in Turkey and Skara Brae in the Orkney Islands, alongside monumental constructions like the Parthenon in Athens, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. The collection also features lesser known treasures including the Megalithic Temples of Malta, Nan Madol in Micronesia, and Great Zimbabwe. These sites provide insight into ancient cultures, religious practices, and architectural achievements that continue to draw visitors from around the world.
Sweden stretches from southern sand beaches to forests and tundra in the north. The country preserves records from several millennia: prehistoric rock carvings, Viking burial sites, medieval fortresses, and 18th century ironworks. The coastline includes limestone cliffs, archipelago islands, and wooden piers at small fishing villages. This collection takes you to historical places like Gammelstad Church Town, where hundreds of red wooden huts surround a medieval pilgrimage center, or the Stone Ship Monument at Kåseberga, where raised stones form the outline of a Viking ship. It also includes national parks such as Skuleskogen with its spruce forests and steep coasts, ironworks like Engelsberg where charcoal blast furnaces still stand, and museums like the Hallwyl collection in Stockholm. Visitors find island fortresses, peatlands, long-distance trails through arctic regions, and villages that show Swedish life from earlier centuries.
