Stockholm Olympic Stadium, Olympic sports facility in Stockholm, Sweden
Stockholm Olympic Stadium is a sports facility in Stockholm, Sweden, recognized for its red brick construction featuring embedded patterns, reliefs, and statuary throughout. The complex spans 105 by 68 meters and accommodates up to 14,500 spectators for sporting occasions.
Constructed in 1912, the facility served as the main venue for the Summer Olympic Games held in the Swedish capital. Four decades later, the site hosted Olympic competition again when equestrian events from the 1956 Games took place there due to quarantine restrictions in Melbourne.
The venue takes its name from its role as host of the Games and has evolved into a space where school groups train alongside international artists performing on stage. The annual marathon finish line runs through the grounds, making it a recurring part of the city's sporting calendar.
The grounds on Lidingövägen remain open to the public daily and are suitable for jogging or football practice on the grass field. Visitors can explore the stands and surroundings when no scheduled events are taking place.
By 2008, a total of 83 athletics world records had been set within this facility, more than at any other Olympic venue worldwide. This remarkable tally reflects decades of use as a stage for international competition.
