Åsele Municipality, Municipal territory in southern Lapland, Sweden
Åsele Municipality is an administrative area in southern Lapland in Västerbotten County. The territory spans extensive landscapes with natural features and various water bodies.
The first Swedish settlement began in 1674 when Nils Andersson and his wife Brita arrived from Finland. From that time, the area developed into a community in Gafsele.
This place has long served as a meeting point for people of different backgrounds. Sami, settlers, merchants, and officials gathered here to conduct trade and handle various matters.
The area is very sparsely populated, which means there is a lot of unsettled nature and large distances between settlements. Visitors should prepare for long travel times and infrastructure is quite limited.
The territory has one of the lowest population densities in Sweden with only a few thousand people spread across a vast area. This extreme sparsity makes it one of the most remote places in the country.
