Ås Abbey, Cistercian monastery ruins in Varberg Municipality, Sweden
The monastery grounds contain archaeological remains of stone floors and eastern walls dating from the medieval construction period.
Founded in 1194 by monks from Sorø Abbey, Ås Abbey grew to become the largest and wealthiest monastic establishment in Halland region.
The monastery served as a burial site for members of Swedish royalty, including children of King Magnus Eriksson in the medieval period.
Archaeological surveys conducted between 2009 and 2011 identified the precise location of the monastery through underground structural elements.
The abbey owned approximately 250 farms and estates throughout its existence, demonstrating the substantial economic influence of medieval religious institutions.
