Vreta Abbey, Medieval monastery ruins in Östergötland, Sweden
Vreta Abbey comprises the remains of a medieval monastery in Östergötland with preserved stone walls and church structures. The ruins display medieval architectural features and contain ancient burial grounds across the site.
The monastery was founded in 1105 and served as Sweden's first convent. Around 1162 it transitioned from the Benedictine to the Cistercian order.
The abbey served as a school for daughters of noble families who came here to receive their education. Several Swedish kings chose this place as their final resting place, making it an important burial site.
The ruins are accessible throughout the year and guided tours operate during the summer months. Parking is available near the entrance for convenient vehicle access.
Excavations on the site uncovered thousands of human skeletons spanning several centuries. Among the remains were individuals of unusually tall stature.
