Hildasholm

Hildasholm is a mansion near Lake Siljan with extensive grounds featuring multiple distinct garden areas and elements from the Arts and Crafts movement. The property combines the residence with a large garden system that includes different planted sections and architectural structures.

The residence was completed in 1911 as a summer home for physician Axel Munthe and his English wife Hilda, who spent seasonal time there with their two sons. The property emerged during a period when Sweden's prosperity and the Arts and Crafts style were shaping how such estates were designed.

The interior spaces show how an upper-class Swedish-English family lived in the early 1900s, with furnishings and decorations that reveal their tastes and daily routines. The rooms display personal choices that reflect the lifestyle of those who made this their seasonal home.

Parts of the grounds were designed by Hilda herself, who expressed her personal interests through specialized garden areas including a kitchen garden and a medicinal garden. These personalized sections reveal what the lady of the house valued and where she focused her attention.
