Runestones at Aspa, Archaeological site with runestones in Runtuna, Sweden

The Runestones at Aspa are four stones positioned at a crossing where an ancient road meets a stream, marking a historically important junction. They stand at a location that has served as a significant passage point for centuries.

During the Middle Ages this site hosted assemblies where newly chosen royal travelers would pass through on their journey. The location served as an important stop for people traveling across the region.

The inscriptions feature serpentine patterns mixed with runic text, showing how Viking Age people expressed themselves through carving. These stones marked places where travelers and locals passed by regularly, making them perfect spots to leave messages for others to see.

The site lies about 6 kilometers north of Runtuna in Sodermanland and is easy to reach. The stones stand freely accessible at their original location, so you can visit them at any time.

One of the stones is among the earliest known inscriptions to mention the word Sweden and holds major historical weight. This discovery reveals how early this kingdom appeared in written records.
