Ängsö Castle, Medieval castle on Ängsö island, Lake Mälaren, Sweden
Ängsö Castle is a four-story stone and brick structure with a cubic design on an island in Lake Mälaren near Västerås. The building combines medieval foundations with later reconstructions and now houses a museum displaying exhibits about the architecture and construction history.
The castle was mentioned by King Canute I of Sweden as Engsev in a royal charter and connected to his father Eric IX's inheritance. In the 18th century, the building underwent major renovations by architect Carl Hårleman.
The castle displays features from different periods that reflect how people used it over time. Visitors can see these layers when walking through the rooms and noticing the shifting building styles.
Access to the island is mainly available during summer months when the museum is open to visitors. The best time to visit is during favorable weather, as the lakeside location brings water conditions to consider.
The Piper family controlled the property across several generations until the early 1970s. It then passed to a local foundation that has preserved it for the public ever since.
