Björnön, nature reserve in Västmanland, Sweden
Björnön is a nature reserve on an island roughly 4 kilometers southeast of Västerås, with two main sections connected by a narrow strip of land. The site features walking trails of varying lengths, swimming areas, picnic spots, cooking fires, and a sledding hill for winter use.
The site was protected in 1959 to preserve the natural environment. A new access bridge was built in 2022 connecting pedestrians and cyclists to the island, significantly improving accessibility compared to the older walking-only crossing.
The name Björnön means "Bear Island" and reflects the region's Swedish heritage. Today visitors use the space for woodland walks, waterside picnics, and watching deer and birds that roam freely across the island.
The site is easily reached by bus, car, or bike from central Västerås. Parking is available at the main entrance near Björnögården, and trails of varying difficulty allow visits for people of all abilities.
The island harbors rare beetle species found only in old linden trees, present in just a few locations across Sweden. Visitors can also spot mistletoe growing on trees, which provides food for birds like the waxwing during winter months.
