Gröndalsbron, Concrete bridge in Stockholm, Sweden
Gröndalsbron connects Stora Essingen island to the Gröndal neighborhood through two separate concrete structures. The pair of bridges carries both vehicle traffic and a light rail line across a water body.
The first section opened in 1967 as part of a major highway project. A second span was added later to accommodate expanding transit needs.
The bridge reflects Swedish engineering approaches across different decades of development. Walking across it, you notice how construction from distinct periods shapes the overall structure.
You can cross on foot or by car and have clear views over the water from different points. The best sightlines come when you move slowly across the structure to take in the surroundings.
The second bridge required reinforcement after cracks were discovered, which became a major news story locally. This incident highlighted the importance of regular inspection for large structures.
